The call from coach Frank Vogel toMyles Turner last Wednesday telling him he was being promoted to the Indiana Pacers' starting lineup the next day came at a perfect time. David and Mary Turner were visiting Indianapolis and would be able to watch their son's first NBA start. Excitement ensued when Myles hung up and broke the news to his parents. "Man," David told Myles, "don't screw this up."

It was all happening so fast, faster than even the confident power forward would have dared imagine. High school near Dallas to the University of Texas in 2014, college to the NBA in 2015 (the No. 11 pick), the first half of his rookie season stalled by a fractured left thumb that cost him 20 games, and now, suddenly, NBA starter in the early days of 2016.

It's not only that he got the job. Far from merely surviving against some good front lines -- Cleveland, Denver and Atlanta were first up -- the 19-year-old Turner has exceeded expectations as a starter while becoming a shot-blocking presence, an effective rebounder and a contributor on offense. He has, after fast-tracking from high school to starter for a potential NBA playoff team -- and returning from injury -- become one of the best rookies in the league.
