Carmelo Anthony committed a different kind of palming violation on Sunday.

The New York Knicks All-Star did the best he could in order to keep the ever-elusive Stephen Curry in front of him.


Melo kept the gifted Golden State Warriors ball-handler in-check by simply placing his hand on the head of the NBA's leading scorer.

Anthony was called for the foul, but one has to admire him for getting creative with his perimeter defense.

A few years ago, I was sitting in the waiting room of a doctor’s office with Stephen Curry. He had battled one injury after another and we didn’t know if his ankle would ever get better. I remember thinking to myself, “This isn’t how it’s supposed to be. This can’t be his life story. This can’t be it.” Steph is one of the best people—not just players—I’ve ever been around and I just remember feeling devastated that he wasn’t going to get a chance to reach his potential.

It’s easy to look at Steph now and see a player who has it all, but that wasn’t always the case. He was doubted so much coming into the league. He slid to No. 7 during the 2009 draft and it’s been pretty well documented that we weren’t his first choice. He went through three head coaches in his first three years, all of which were losing seasons. He got hurt, people wrote him off. They said he couldn’t play point guard. They said he couldn’t defend. They said he’d never lead a team to the playoffs.

He proved them all wrong.

Right after we won the NBA championship in June, Steph and I had a moment in the locker room. There weren’t really words exchanged as much as emotions. My recollection of the night was that we had basically reached the mountaintop. There’s nothing higher than winning a title in pro sports. There’s nowhere else to go. I looked around the room and saw the happiest group of people I’ve ever seen. Everyone was going crazy. But when I looked at Steph, I had a moment of reflection. It kind of hit me what he had gone through. To prove all of those people wrong, to overcome such long odds, it was just incredible to see him achieve his dreams. I looked at him and said, “You deserve this.” In life, if you work hard enough, you do get what you deserve. I had a flashback to that doctor’s office and thought about how far Steph had come. It was such a gratifying moment.

People are well aware by now of Steph’s accolades on the basketball court. He’s arguably the best player in the world. He’s the reigning MVP and an NBA champion. But what people don’t know is his character, integrity and authenticity are also world class. Combine all of his traits and you have a person that is elite in every way. Everything he does is with the highest character. He’s a great husband, father, son, brother, friend and teammate. He’s a joy to be around. He has a daughter the same age as mine and I’ve gotten to see how he approaches fatherhood and how he treats his wife. It’s beyond imaginable. I’ve learned so much from him. He’s the guy you hope your daughter marries.

Ask anyone in our organization and you’ll universally get a positive response. He treats everyone with respect. In his MVP speech last spring, he made a point to mention our security guards and equipment managers by name. There’s nothing arrogant about him. He’s confident, but not cocky. He works extremely hard when no one is watching. What you hope for in an organization is someone who represents your group in the most humane way possible. The Warriors could not have picked a better candidate—or for that matter the entire NBA. I represented players as an agent for 14 years and I know a lot about players in this league. I’ve never come across one like Steph.

Most of the time when you meet a famous person you’re disappointed, because they didn’t live up to the image you’d created in your head. Sometimes you meet a famous person that does meet your expectations and you say, “Wow, they really are great.” And sometimes, on the most rare of occasions, you meet someone who exceeds every expectation imaginable. Steph is that guy. He’s the rarest breed. You hear all these great things about him and not only are they true, but there’s even more the public will never know.

The most impressive thing about Steph’s basketball career is he’s gotten better every year. It’s probably true over his entire life. I don’t think he’s ever not improved from one season to the next. That’s pretty tough to do when you win MVP and lead a team to 67 wins and an NBA title—but just look at what he’s doing this season. He’s taken his game to heights that we couldn’t have even imagined.

I’m fortunate enough to get to see Steph work on his craft behind the scenes. If you were to watch him train you would understand how he does these insane things when everyone is watching. If we all worked with the same focus and efficiency he approaches the game with, we’d all be incredibly accomplished people. He hones his shot every day and he’s already the best shooter in the world. When I watch him drain a 30-footer off the dribble, I’m never surprised. You don’t see all the work he puts into that shot, that exact situation. He’s practiced everything.

Not only was Steph the most dominant basketball player on the planet in 2015, but he also helped change the game. It’s no longer unusual to take 10 or 11 three-pointers in a game because he pioneered a new way of thinking. He’s partially responsible for the way the perimeter game has been turned into a weapon in the NBA. He exploited a rule that a lot of people knew was there but had yet to master. He’s made the three-point line his and is executing with astonishing efficiency. To lead a team like he did last year and evolve the game along the way, it’s something people are going to remember for a very long time. Every championship gets its proper due, but some stand out a little more than others. I think this one might be the exception.

To see Steph preserve, succeed and reach his potential has been a tremendous experience. It’s why we love sports. It’s why Stephen Curry should be SI’s 2015 Sportsman of the Year.

With both Stephen Curry and Lionel Messi at the top of their games in their respective sports, the comparisons between the two are inevitable.

 When the Golden State Warriors point guard was asked whether he was the Messi of the NBA, or whether the Barcelona star was the Curry of the pitch, the reigning league MVP played a little coy.

 "I don't know - it's a chicken and egg kind of conversation," Curry said with a laugh, according to The Sydney Morning Herald's Roy Ward.

 Curry explained their similarities:

 We both have a creative style, a feel when you are out on the pitch or the court. I'm trying to do some fancy things out there with both hands, making crossover moves and having a certain flair to my game and that's definitely the style Messi has when he is out there in his matches.

 But Curry - whose team shows no signs of slowing down after becoming the first team in NBA history to begin a season 16-0 - made it clear that he is definitely a Messi fan.

The Golden State Warriors made NBA history Tuesday night by winning their 16th straight game to start the season, blasting the Los Angeles Lakers, 111-77, at Oracle Arena.

 With the league's most efficient offense matched up against the third-worst defense, the Warriors imposed their will from start to finish in a showcase of solid shooting, pinpoint passing and seamless execution.

 The defending champions shot 48.9 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from three, but their most impressive statistical achievement came in the form of 32 assists on 45 made baskets. By comparison, the Lakers assisted 16 times on 31 converted field goals.

 Kobe Bryant, despite his team’s slew of struggles, is looking ahead with confidence, per Baxter Holmes of ESPN.com. "I've seen stranger things happen," Bryant said. "We’ve been playing like s--t. We might go up there and we might play like gangbusters up there. You never know."

 The Warriors are winning by an average of 14.4 points per game, far and away a league high, while the Lakers are second-worst in shooting at 41.5 percent.

 In 10 games, Bryant is shooting a career-low 33.1 percent, and despite being pegged a facilitator by head coach Byron Scott, per Shahan Ahmed of NBCLA, Bryant laughed at the notion, per Holmes. "When I've become the voice of 'ball-movement reason,' you know you have an issue," Bryant said. "I never thought I'd see the day when I'd be the one preaching that stuff. That's crazy.”

 The first team to begin the season 15-0 was the 1948-49 Washington Capitols, which fell to the 3-13 Indianapolis Jets, 94-78.

 While Bryant is right that crazier things have happened, the Lakers are far removed from being championship contenders as they rebuild around young players such as D'Angelo Russell and Julius Randle. An upset is always possible, but the reality is the Lakers, winless in their last three, are likely to see their losing streak stretch to four games.

Kobe Bryant has never lacked confidence.

With the Los Angeles Lakers about to face the undefeated Golden State Warriors on Tuesday, Bryant told reporters on Sunday that he believes in his team.

Realistically, the Lakers probably don't have a shot at beating the Warriors. Golden State has won 15 straight games to start the season, tying an NBA record in the process and looking like an unstoppable juggernaut. The Lakers, on the other hand, have lost three straight games and are currently the worst team in the Western conference. They've also relied on an aging Bryant way too much.

Of course, Bryant shouldn't be saying that the Lakers will get steamrolled by the Warriors. Confidence is definitely needed against the Warriors and if the Lakers can draw some inspiration from Bryant so be it. However, even head coach Byron Scott is more realistic about the Lakers' chances against the Warriors.

 The Golden State Warriors defeated the Chicago Bulls 106-94 on Friday, becoming the fourth team in NBA history to start a regular season with a 14-0 record.

 The Warriors joined the 1957-58 Boston Celtics, 1993-94 Houston Rockets, and 2002-03 Dallas Mavericks as the only NBA teams to come out of the gates with 14 wins and zero losses.

 Friday's win was Golden State's 26th consecutive home victory. The Warriors are the 15th franchise in league history to accomplish the feat.

 However, Stephen Curry and company would not be denied.

Curry led the Warriors with 27 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals, while Harrison Barnes played the role of secondary contributor with 20 points and nine rebounds. 

The contest featured several first-half lead changes, with the Warriors leading 50-47 at the break.

 The Bulls failed to outscore their opponents in either of the second-half stanzas, as the Warriors pulled away for good late in the fourth.

 One day after the Warriors almost lost to the Los Angeles Clippers, the Bulls appeared to have a good opportunity to upend the defending champs.

 Chicago beat Golden State on Jan. 27, a loss which snapped the Warriors' 19-game home winning streak.

 Friday's game nearly came down to the wire, but an upset was not in the cards.

 Next up with a chance to stop the Warriors in their tracks are the Denver Nuggets, as the Western Conference foes are set to clash Sunday.

Pistons' Jennings participates in 1st full-court drills since last season

 The Detroit Pistons' Brandon Jennings took part in full-court practice Wednesday for the first time since rupturing his left Achilles tendon in January.

 Jennings ran 10-minute, 4-on-4 drills and remains on track for a December return to game action, coach Stan Van Gundy told reporters. The timetable for the 26-year-old has more or less held firm to estimates, as he's been building back strength in his leg.

 With the one-time lead guard on the shelf, Reggie Jackson has ensconced himself as the starting point, averaging 20.6 points and 5.6 assists this season. The pair have yet to play together as Jackson was acquired after Jennings went down last season.

Move over, LeBron James: You are no longer the best basketball player on the planet.

 LeBron has passed the torch, and what is amazing is who the torch was passed to and how convincing the move has been.

 The new best player in the world is not Kevin Durant, who has long been the second-best in the world. It is not Anthony Davis, despite the assumption of many that Davis was the heir apparent. 

Rather, it is that shooter out of Davidson College, Stephen Curry.

 And how did the 6-foot-3 (wink, wink), not-really-a-shooting-guard, not-really-a-point-guard ascend to the throne of World's Greatest Basketball Player just nine years after barely being recruited out of high school?

 He became the perfect basketball weapon, a force who can't be guarded and can only be stopped if he stops himself.

 We all know about his great shooting and incredible range. But what separates Curry is that he doesn't need off-the-ball movement and picks to create space for a shot. He has an amazing ability to create his own space, and he doesn't even need that much.

And he can shoot from anywhere on the court, so the defense can't ease up and they can't sit back, even from deep.

The combination of not needing a lot of space and having incredible range creates a huge problem for defenses.

 Whoever is guarding Curry needs to respect his range and play him tight. Curry leads the NBA with 110 points on pull-up shots, 28 more than anybody else, and he is making a whopping 48.8% of those shots.

 That means getting a hand on him 25 feet from the basket, an area defenders are not used to guarding.

 But when a defender does come up tight, Curry is so quick that he can then blow past the defender for an easy layup.

Or an easy dish to a big man for a wide-open bucket. Once he has a step past the defender, the defense is broken.

So, the defender can't play off Curry, because that is basically like giving him a 22-foot layup, and the defender can't play too tight, because Curry will just use his quickness and blow right by.

 The only other alternative is to send two to three defenders at Curry.

 He will also beat that.

 Notice how calm he stays despite being surrounded by three defenders. Rather than panic and rush the dribble, Curry actually hesitates on the dribble after going behind his back, waiting for the ball to be in a better spot for his left hand.

Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas summed up the greatness of Curry with a column in The Players' Tribune, in which he explains why it is so difficult to guard Curry, noting that what makes him dangerous is that on defense, "you're always guessing."

Stephen Curry sure has that timing thing down. With the game on the verge of getting away from the Warriors, the reigning MVP took things over and led the Dubs to a 100-84 victory on Wednesday night in Memphis.

 The Warriors guard had 14 points over the final 3:08 of the third period, increasing what was a one-point lead into double digits. Not one to lack flash, Curry turned the momentum of the game with an off-balance, one-handed 3-pointer with 2:26 left in the period. A few minutes later, he knocked down a deep trey in transition as time expired in the quarter, setting the Warriors up for their ninth straight win to open the season.

 At 9-0, the Warriors match their best start to a season in franchise history, and Curry’s sudden outburst was a key ingredient in getting there. The Warriors, who previously had a 15-point lead in the first half, fell victim to what has become all too common over the years in the Grindhouse, sloppy play and a super slow pace caused by a seemingly non-stop parade of fouls. Zach Randolph knocked down a pair of free throws, two of his 12 points in the period, to bring the Grizzlies within one at 57-56, but then Curry took over.

On Jan. 18, 2015, during the heat of his MVP season, Stephen Curry made the 70-minute trip from Oakland across the bay to Santa Cruz, Calif. It was an off day, and he had a game to catch.

Younger brother Seth, a star at the minor-league level for the Erie BayHawks, was playing in the NBA D-League Showcase. Steph watched from the front row as Seth scored 25 points in front of a host of NBA scouts. “He’s my biggest fan,” Seth said afterward.
